Overview of Demonstration by Margaret Garrard

Margaret Garrard  was our demonstrator for October. She has been turning for 27 years, initially taking it up as a hobby. She covered involuted turning, using up small squares of wood, painting and piercing!

Involuted Turning

Margaret showed us how to make the individual steps to make an involuted piece of turning including how to make the design, create the blank, turn the pieces around and attach a finial inside or a bottle of whisky!

Coaster

Margaret had some small squares of timber and showed us how to attach them to the lathe, turn them and decorate the base with beads. An important note is not to make the round tile fit too tightly as the tile can break as the wood moves!

Thin Turned Decorated Bowl

Margaret turned a thin bowl, about 2mm thick, then showed us some sources of inspiration for her designs including greetings card, stickers and stencils. She showed us how to transfer a design onto the bowl, cover it with a masking film and make a stencil, spray paint and then the tools used and how to pierce the work.
