Mick Hanbury is an artist producing beautifully decorated unique pieces of wood turning. He started his career as a cabinet maker, taking up wood turning 25 years ago.
His demonstration this month brought us decorating techniques using paint and texture.
Shield – Paint Techniques
The first piece Mick turned and decorated was a shield which he developed after his grandchild requested a shield and sword.
Mick used this item to show how to obtain different paint effects, encouraging us to experiment and just go for it rather than overthinking.
He also illustrated using the indexing feature of the lathe to evenly insert upholstery pins around the border.
Elegant Box with Finial – Texturing Techniques
Next Mick turned a box with a finial. He used this piece to demonstrate some texturing and also how to use brass powder and glue for make a feature of the cracks.
The photo does not do it justice!
Bowl – Texturing
Mick showed us how to use the wood we’re going to remove to experiment with texturing. He also used this piece to show how easy it is to remove the design and change it.
Spinning Top – Decorating
In the few minutes left at the end of the demonstration, Mick quickly turned a spinning top, even texturing the edge.
Thank you, Mick, for an interesting and inspiring talk. Now, where did I put my paint…ck,
